What has held us back from realizing the thriving Black economy we envision? A Wakanda, built by us, sustained by us, flourishing beyond imagination. Time and again, we've dreamed of ownership, spoken passionately about it, yet it remains elusive. But why?
As I look deeper into our struggles, one glaring truth emerges: we have not yet fully embraced strategic ownership of critical infrastructures. Every community that thrives—even amid turmoil—does so because they control foundational elements: banks, property, manufacturing, technology, agriculture. The very arteries of economic independence. Yet, too often, Black voices and hands remain absent at the core of these vital industries. It’s not enough to merely have representation; we need unequivocal ownership.
Observing Canada’s corporate corridors, our presence remains faint, whispered rather than boldly declared. Where are the stories of Black corporate titans proudly sharing how they've navigated these critical infrastructures? Are we silent out of privacy, or is the painful truth simply that our numbers at the helm remain devastatingly small? We must face these questions head-on, acknowledging reality as the first critical step toward meaningful change.
The answer lies not in integration alone, but in intentional creation. Black-owned banks must become cornerstones of our economic strategy. Imagine the collective strength when our dollars circulate through institutions owned by those who inherently understand the historical weight of systemic barriers. Through these banks, our resources would directly fuel Black-owned land, businesses, and properties—each purchase bolstering our community’s economic autonomy.
Consider the empowerment waiting in industry ownership: manufacturing plants led by Black innovators, agricultural operations cultivated by Black hands, tech companies driven by Black ingenuity, and construction firms shaping cities according to our vision. With dedicated Black ownership in these vital sectors, we fortify our community’s capacity to prioritize our unique needs—education, housing, food security, technology, and finance.
Building infrastructure from within doesn't merely mean survival—it ensures legacy. It promises future generations a fortified foundation, crafted by their predecessors, safeguarded against external instability. Our ancestors dreamed of a future they would never see; now, the responsibility rests with us to ensure our great-grandchildren inherit not dreams, but realities.
To reclaim our future and build sustainable Black-owned infrastructure, here are actionable steps:
Create and Support Black-Owned Financial Institutions – Deposit funds collectively to amplify purchasing power.
Strategically Invest in Land and Real Estate – Acquire property that builds wealth and community influence.
Establish and Grow Black-Led Businesses Across Key Industries – Prioritize manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and construction.
Develop a Robust Community Network – Foster collaboration and collective decision-making.
Educate and Empower Through Mentorship – Share knowledge openly to cultivate the next generation of leaders.
Advocate for Policy and Institutional Change – Ensure local, regional, and national policies support our economic goals.
Together, we hold the power to build from within, taking charge of our infrastructure today, ensuring prosperity tomorrow, and truly reclaiming our future. In the next piece, I will point you toward organizations that have started this journey and how we can get plugged in.
